Empire Magazine Analysis

  • The masthead on the magazine is in big, bold letters this would have been done to draw attention to the cover. The colour of the masthead is also red, this could connote danger, which can be emphasized by the feature article photograph which shows a thriller on the cover.
  • The colour scheme of the page is white, red and dark blue/grey. They have done this because the red and the white stand out from the darker background; this would have been done to draw the eye of the reader to the cover.
  • The main coverline that has been used is in big white writing, this draws the eye to the reader as they would want to find out further information about the film mentioned.
  • This cover uses many plugs throughout the whole page. This is to give the reader a little insight into what is going to be included, the intention of this would be to draw a wider audience to possibly someone who may to be a fan of the main genre mentioned, but may want to read something else included. The main plug that draw the most attention is the ‘Turtle Recall’ this is because it sticks out the from page and uses a different colour pallete to the rest of the page. The other main plug on the page is the selection of pictures, these have been arranged into a film strip which links to the film genre and shows a selection of different films.
  • The feature article photograph that has been used is a two shot of the main characters, the man is embracing the woman, however, she is not responsive to the man. This connotes that perhaps she is lifeless which possibly hints at a plot line in the story. The photograph covers over the masthead, they have done this because the magazine is well known and they do not always need to show us the name as many people will know the house style of the magazine.
  • The puff that has been used stands out on the page because it uses a different colour scheme to the rest of the page, the beige cirlce looks like a sticker on the page. This has been done to boost the magazine and attract a wider audience of people who may only want to read world known magazines.
  • Some of the coverlines on the page that have been used have been put in red, this would be to draw the attention of the reader and gives deeper information of some of the main storylines that are included within the magazine.

Sight and Sound Magazine Analysis

  • The first thing that I notice is the masthead at the top of the page, it is in bright yellow and red lettering. This connotes that there is a happy feeling about the magazine and it promoted happy films within itself. There is a white border around the lettering, this helps to make it stand out from the page and draws the attention to the audience.
  • The coverlines are used to attract the audience to the magazine; it may be fans of this particular film or actor. This main one is the biggest in font size, which shows that it links to the main feature article photograph. The other coverlines on the cover are used to give us a further insight into the stories within the magazine. This would help attract the reader to other stories as well as the main feature.
  • The feature article photograph is a shot that has been taken from the film and used on the cover. It helps to show us the genre of the movie, which is romantic drama. This would help to draw in the specific audience to that genre. In the two shot the people are not looking at the camera this makes them look more relaxed and natural.
  • The colour scheme that they have used on the cover is very bright; this shows that there is a happy feel about the magazine. The typography that is used is white which stands out against the background; the colour has connotations of being angelic and happy. This goes with the style of the cover as they have given it a very light look.
  • Throughout the page there are small amounts of red. This stands out from the rest of the text on the page, which draws the attention of the reader. ‘Plus’ has been written in red because they want to emphasize the amount of extras that they have included in the.
  • They have used a puff to boost the reputation of the magazine; this would appeal to some readers as they would enjoy reading a magazine that is known to be of an ‘international’ success.

American Cinematographer Magazine Analysis

  • The masthead of the magazine ‘American Cinematographer’ is there in big, bold writing. The writing is in the black font, this helps to show that they are serious about what they are talking about eg. the films in question.
  • The next thing that I notice is the main coverlines, these are used to attract the audience to the main storylines within the magazine. They would want to attract the possible audience of Bruno Delbonnel or the film that is mentioned, as that is the selling point  in which they want to target their audience.
  • There are additional coverlines at the top of the magazine naming films that are mentioned within the magazine, it is showcasing the cinematographers that are featured in the magazine.
  • As the whole genre of the magazine is focusing on the camera/cinematography of the films, rather than the actual films themselves. This is why the cinematographers are frequently mentioned on the cover.
  • The feature article photograph could be a screenshot from the film which has been mentioned on the cover ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’. This is possibly from the drama genre, so will attract the attention  of fans of this genre or fans of the film that is mentioned.
  • The colour scheme of the front cover is blue and white; this is a simple and netural colour scheme, there are no shockingly bright colours. This has been done so the cover doesn’t look too glitzy, which shows that they are serious about their topic and are focusing mainly on the films.
  • The puff that is used on the cover (‘The international journal of motion imaging’) is covered up they still have used one, convetnionally theses are used to boost the status of the magazine and help to attract the audience.
  • The typography that has been used on the cover is quite boring and plain. This shows that they are a very serious magazine and want to focus on the information.

  • The first thing we see is the girl in the forefront of the poster; this shows us that she is the main character as she is the most prominent on the poster. She is making eye contact with the camera, which helps to draw the audience in as we feel that she is looking at us.
  • The colour scheme of the poster is orange and red, these are both very bright colours which helps the poster to stand out and draw the attention of the audience. The title is in bright orange which contrasts from the black background in which is it placed.
  • The background of the poster contains lots of images of other dancers, this is trying to emphasize to the audience that the main plot is about dance.
  • The mid shot of the two people embracing shows that there is a possible romantic storyline within the film; this has been done to help suggest the storyline of the film.
  • A catchy slogan has been used to make the poster more memorable to the audience, this helps to give the film a brand and image.
  • A conventional thing for the posters to do is to give us general information about the film eg. the release date.

  • The main colour scheme is blue; this is a very bright colour. This helps to draw the eye of the audience to the poster.
  • slogan is used to the poster, this helps to make the poster more memorable to the audience.
  • The name on the poster has been written in graffiti style, this makes the poster look ‘street’ which helps to show the theme of the film.
  • The boy who is in the middle of the poster is dressed in different clothes than the others, brighter and whiter, this suggests that he is the main character in the film as that we should focus on him.
  • All of the characters are dressed in ‘street’ attire which shows that the film is going to be based around this, and there is not really a theme of professional dance. This would help to attract the audience to the film as they would be interested in this particular genre.
  • The characters on the poster are all holding police ‘MOB’ shields, this could suggest that there is possible police trouble in the story line; this shows the audience what is possibly included in the film.
  • Lastly, the poster also gives us all the necessary information for the film eg. the release date.

Silver Linings Playbook Poster Analysis

  • The colour scheme for the image is black, white and yellow this is very eye catching and would draw the attention of the audience as yellow is a bright colour contrasting against the black and the white.
  • The next thing that I notice is the two actors that are at the sides of the poster, both look happy, which gives us connotations that this film is going to make us happy in the end.
  • The close up of the faces shows us that it could be a very exposing and revealing story.
  • The main thing that our eye is drawn to is the name of the film; this is placed in the centre of the poster which is where we first look, they have done this to inform the audience the name of the film.
  • The thing that makes this poster individual for this film is that in the middle section they have drawn American Football plays; it links the idea of football in the storyline of the film.

  • A fast fade to white is cut with a slash in the music. The fade then transitions into a long shot of the men walking over the hill - this shot is one of hope to the viewers eye.
  • The more up beat and happy music suggests a turning point in the trailer, the music is accompanied by the non-diagetic voice over 'now', again this emphasizes the turning point and makes the audience have hope for the men.
  • The long shot of the men in a queue is paired with the non-diagetic voice over '6 unemployed factory workers are training for it', this makes the audience intrigued for what is coming.

  • The music in the trailer now starts to become up beat, which gives the trailer an up-beat feel.
  • 'A comedy' is stated in the voice over as a long shot is shown of the men dancing in the queue. This is placed here to add emphasis to the comical element of the film.
